How To

How to replace a broken window

One of the most popular home improvement projects is to replace broken windows. This task involves repairing any damage to your glass. Repairs should take about 30 minutes in this situation. The problem is that you might end up with further damage to your home if the glass pane breaks. This article contains some tips to help you replace a damaged window.

First step: Remove the old glass from its frame

First, take out all the screws that are holding the glass in place. Next, undo the lock in the middle of the bottom section. Next, lift the window slightly up so that it is no longer attached the sill plate (the steel bar at the floor). The last step is to gently loosen all remaining screws with a tool. After the panes have been removed, you should clean them thoroughly.

Second step: Clean your new glass

Use a dry cloth or paper towel to wipe away any dirt from the surface of the glass. A spray bottle filled with water, rubbing alcohol and water can be used to clean debris stuck beneath the glass.

Step 3: Install the new glass

Reattach the window panes into the frames. Use a screwdriver to push the outermost edge of your pane down. Gently push your pane back into its opening. Move on to the next piece of pane. Push it into the opening in the frame. Continue to insert the panes until you have assembled the whole window. To seal the area where the panes meet, use a silicone caulk gun.

Fourth step: Repair any damage.

If you are installing new glass, be sure to inspect the area where the break occurred. This will help determine if further repairs are necessary. Install two pieces of small wood on each side of any hole if the break was near the corner. These wooden blocks will strengthen the window while acting as spacers for the glass during expansion and contraction of the weatherproofing.

Fifth step: Seal the repaired area

After the glass has been replaced, apply a bead of silicone caulking to the perimeter edges of the window frame. This will seal the glass to the wallboard. Silicone caulking is available at hardware stores as well as online. You should choose a color to match the wall paint.

Let the caulking dry overnight. The caulking should be left to harden completely before you disturb it. If you don't wait long enough, you could cause the caulking to crack when you remove it.
