How do I replace a cracked window?

Replacing broken windows is one of the most common home improvement tasks. The task consists of repairing damage caused to the glass inside your house. This repair will take only 30 minutes. However, if you are not familiar with how to replace broken panes of glass, you may cause further damage to the home. This article provides some tips on replacing a broken window.

First, take the old glasses out of their frames

To remove the old windowpane, you will first need to take out the screws that held it in place. Next, remove the lock at the top of the lower section of your window frame. Next, lift the window upwards so it isn’t attached to sill plates (the metal bars below the floor). Use a pry to loosen any remaining screws. After the panes are taken off, thoroughly clean them.

Second step: Clean and polish the new glass

You can wipe any dirt off the glass surface with a towel or a dry cloth. Use a spray bottle with water and alcohol to clean any debris that has gotten under the glass.

Third step: Reinstall the new glass

Then, attach the window panes back into the frames. Start by pushing down on the lower edge of the outermost pane with the tip of a screwdriver. Gently push your pane back into its opening. After moving to the next one, push it firmly against your previous one before you reattach it. Continue to insert the panes until you have assembled the whole window. Use a silicone caulk gun to seal the space where the panes meet.

Fourth step: Repair the damaged area

Inspect the area around the hole when installing new glass to see if any repairs are required. Inspect the area around the window for cracks near the corners. If so, add two small pieces wood to each side. These wooden blocks will be strong and can also act as spacers, keeping the glass in its place during expansion and contract of the weatherproofing.

The fifth step is to seal the area.

After replacing the glass, you can apply silicone caulking along the perimeter edges to the window frame. This will create a strong seal between glass and surrounding wallboard. You can buy silicone caulking online or at hardware shops. Make sure you choose a color that is consistent with the wall's existing paint.

Let the caulking set overnight. After the caulking has dried completely, do not disturb it. You can cause cracking in the caulking if it isn't left enough time.
