It is mandatory to have a handyman's license in Massachusetts. But what does this mean for you? What is the difference between an operator's license for a handyman and one for a supervisor? What about a bond, you ask? What does it all mean for customers? All kinds of work are required, not just fixing your house. But where do you begin? And how do you avoid being fined?

Home improvement contractor registration

You must apply for a Massachusetts license as a home improvement contractor. To become a licensed home improvement contractor, you must fill out an application and pay an initial registration fee of $150. This includes a Guaranty Fund Fee of $100. The fee goes up to $200 for employees with four to ten people. The fee for more than 30 employees goes up to $500. A $100 fee will be charged to renew your home-improvement contractor license once you are licensed. There is no Guaranty Fee required for renewal.

Any business that does construction must have a home improvement contractor license. It allows them to erect scaffolding, connect sewer lines, and utility service lines, and provide mechanical and structural service. You can also subcontract, consult, and work as a hardscape contractor with a home improvement contractor. The Massachusetts Office of Consumer Affairs requires that contractors have at least two licenses in order to perform home improvement work. After being licensed, you will need to register your company as a home-improvement contractor with them.

How to Replace a Broken Window?

It is one of the most commonly performed home improvements. This task involves repairing any damage to your glass. Repair work in this instance should take no more than 30 minutes. But if you do not know how to replace a broken pane of glass, then you risk causing further damage to the house. This article contains some tips to help you replace a damaged window.

First step: Remove the old glass from its frame

First, remove all screws that hold the glass in place. Then undo the lock at the top center of the bottom section of the window frame. Next, lift the window slightly up so that it is no longer attached the sill plate (the steel bar at the floor). Finally, use a pry tool to carefully loosen the remaining screws until they pop out of their holes. After the panes are taken off, thoroughly clean them.

Step 2: Clean the new glasses

To remove dirt and grime from the glass' surface, use a paper towel or dry cloth. A spray bottle filled with water, rubbing alcohol and water can be used to clean debris stuck beneath the glass.

Step 3: Install the new glass

Reattach the window panes into the frames. Start by pushing down on the lower edge of the outermost pane with the tip of a screwdriver. Gently push your pane back into its opening. Next, move on to the next pane and press it against the frame before attaching it. Continue inserting the panes till the window is complete. Use a silicone caulk gun to seal the space where the panes meet.

Fourth step: Repair any damage.

Inspect the area around the hole when installing new glass to see if any repairs are required. If the break occurred near the corner of the window, install two small pieces of wood along each side of the hole. These wooden blocks will provide strength for the window, as well as acting as spacers during the expansion or contraction of the weatherproofing.

Fiveth step: Seal the repair area

After replacing the glass, you can apply silicone caulking along the perimeter edges to the window frame. This will create an excellent seal between the glass & the surrounding wallboard. You can buy silicone caulking online or at hardware shops. You should choose a color to match the wall paint.

Let the caulking dry overnight. The caulking should be left to harden completely before you disturb it. You can cause cracking in the caulking if it isn't left enough time.
